My Gratitude Journal This Thanksgiving

I’ve written before about the journal I have kept for the past twenty years. About two years ago, sometime after the pandemic started, I decided to add a paragraph each day listing things I was grateful for. I’d read about the healing powers of keeping a gratitude journal, and this was my nod to the practice.

So every morning, I try to think of at least five things I am grateful for. Some days it is easy. Other days I have to think long and hard. Some days all that comes to mind is a thank-you for the lovely house I live in—which has been true every day for the past three years. Some days I have particular blessings to recall—a recent visit with family or friends, or a healthier than usual day for my husband.

As an example of my gratitude journal, here is a list of what I’m grateful for related to this Thanksgiving holiday:

  • I am grateful that my son and daughter-in-law had safe travels in coming to visit us this week.
  • I am grateful that last week’s cold weather has improved and it is likely to remain decent through Thanksgiving.
  • I am grateful that most of my Christmas shopping is done and I have no reason to brave the Black Friday crowds.
  • I am grateful to have my father’s stuffing recipe. (And my notes to tell how I have adapted it.)
  • I am grateful that my son and his wife like to cook and will take the laboring oar in preparing the meal.
  • I am grateful to have so many fond holiday memories of past Thanksgivings, both with my family and with my in-laws.

What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving?
